Milk producers in Serbia started handing out tons of the product to residents on Tuesday as a sign of protest against the announced reduction in its purchase price, local media reported.

The president of the dairy association, Milorad Majstorović, told Beta news agency that producers started the action after dairies announced that from January 1, the purchase price will be reduced by five dinars per liter.
“We bought bottles and are distributing milk to residents. Whatever is left, we will donate to humanitarian purposes,” Majstorović said.
He stated that producers intended to spill tons of milk as part of a protest in the central square in Kraljevo, 180 kilometers south of Belgrade, but changed their mind and decided to distribute it.
The price of a liter of milk currently ranges from 40 to 60 dinars (0.34 to 0.52 euros).
Majstorović noted that the producers decided to protest to draw the attention of the authorities the need to protect the domestic market against possible imports of surplus milk from European Union countries.

“Some dairies have reduced their purchase prices, and others have announced a reduction of up to five dinars per liter because they can import milk from the EU, on which the United States has imposed tariffs,” said the president of the dairy association. He added that milk producers expect the government in Belgrade to find a way to protect domestic producers.
