A federal court in California awarded the Disney corporation $10 million. penalties in connection with the illegal collection of personal data about children on YouTube – the US Ministry of Justice announced on Tuesday. The company allegedly used the data to target ads.

The court's decision follows a settlement reached between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Disney in September to end the government's lawsuit against the corporation. The case concerns films posted by Disney on YouTube that were not categorized as children's films, which enabled the collection of audience data for the purpose of targeting advertising. Disney videos on YouTube have had millions of views.
Collecting data from children under 13 violated the Children's Personal Information Protection Act (COPPA) of 1998. In addition to paying the fine, the court ordered Disney to create a program to ensure it complies with the law.

“The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring that parents have a say in how their children's information is collected and used,” Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate said in a statement.
The payment of the penalty does not necessarily mean the end of legal consequences for the company. In addition to the lawsuit from the US administration, in September, a civil class action lawsuit against Disney was filed in a California court on the same matter. This lawsuit has not yet been resolved.
