This is one of the most anticipated changes by users of the most popular email service in the world. Google is changing its policy and will soon allow you to edit your email address in the @gmail.com domain. This is great news for people who years ago created accounts with wording that may now be detrimental to their professional image.

For years, the rule was simple: you choose your Gmail address once and for all. If, when creating an account a decade ago, a user chose a login that sounded childish or frivolous, they were doomed to it. The only solution – if you wanted to have a more professional address, e.g. “firstname.surname” – was to create a completely new account, which resulted in the loss of correspondence history and the need to transfer data.

Image revolution

According to updated Google support documentation, the Mountain View giant is introducing a process that allows you to edit an existing login. From the perspective of the labor market and business, this is a key change. An e-mail address is often the first business card in contacts with recruiters, banks or contractors.

People who were forced to use addresses from their school days in official correspondence or on their CV will be able to “rebrand” without having to abandon their main Google account, often associated with a cloud drive, calendar or payment services.

Be careful with data in banks and offices

Experts remind, however, that changing your e-mail address is not just cosmetic. The Gmail address is often used as a login to electronic banking, Zaufany Profile or the mObywatel platform. If they decide to modify it, users will need to remember to update their contact details in all financial institutions and offices so as not to lose access to notifications and password recovery procedures.
