“The Brigitte Bardot Foundation announces with great sadness the death of its founder and president, Brigitte Bardot, a world-famous actress and singer who decided to abandon her great career to devote her life and energy to animal welfare and her foundation,” reads the statement. No date or place of death was given.

Brigitte Anne Marie Bardot was born on September 28, 1934 into a well-to-do Parisian family. Her dad Louis Bardot was an engineer with a passion for poetry, photography and cinema. Mother Anne-Marie – a fashion and ballet lover who shines in salons.
In 1948, Marie-Jeanne convinced her friend, hat designer Jean Barthet, to let Brigitte walk in his show. The teenager charmed the audience. She immediately started receiving more modeling jobs. In 1949, she appeared on the cover of Elle magazine.

Her photos attracted the attention of Marc Allegret, who invited her to a casting for the film “Les Lauriers sont coupes”. During this meeting, she met the assistant director Roger Vadim, with whom she fell in love at first sight. In 1952, Brigitte and Roger got married. She was only 18, he was 24.
It was her husband who made her a star by casting her in the film “And God Created Woman”. For the next two decades, Bardot embodied the ideal of a sensual woman. She played, among others, in “Contempt”, “Viva Maria”, “Charming Idiot”, “The Parisian Woman”, “Great Maneuvers” and “Queens of the Wild West”.

In 1973, Brigitte Bardot appeared on the big screen for the last time. She played the main role in the film “If Don Juan Were a Woman” by Vadim. No one later managed to convince Bardot to return to the cinema.
In the 1970s, Brigitte devoted herself to her greatest passion – animals and the fight for their rights. “I gave my youth and beauty to men. I will give my wisdom and experience to animals,” she decided.
In 1986, she founded The Brigitte Bardot Foundation for the Welfare and Protection of Animals. Selling real estate and personal items at auctions provided her with funds to run the foundation. She started organizing protests against, among others, ritual slaughter, consumption of horse meat and experiments carried out on animals. Her ties with the film community gradually loosened.
