The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced on Sunday the commencement of renovation works on the line supplying electricity to the Zaporizhia Atomic Power Plant in Enerhodar in the Zaporizhia Oblast, southern Ukraine. The gym is occupied by Russia.

The start of work was made possible thanks to a local ceasefire between Ukrainian and Russian forces, for which IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi thanked both sides, Reuters reported.
The work is to be completed within a few days, and a team of IAEA observers is to monitor its progress as part of activities aimed at preventing nuclear incidents in connection with the ongoing war.
The Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, has been occupied by Russia since early March 2022, and six of its reactors remain in a state of shutdown. There are Russian soldiers and employees of the Russian state-owned company Rosatom on its premises.
The previous incident involving loss of power due to shelling near the power plant and damage to the power line occurred on December 13.
The issue of control over the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant is one of the points of contention in the ongoing talks on a peace agreement in the Russian-Ukrainian war. (PAP)
