Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that he plans to have a meeting with Donald Trump on Sunday, according to CNN. The publication Axios wrote that the American president is expected to receive his counterpart in Florida at Mar-a-Lago, but the White House has not yet officially confirmed this.

Zelenskiy's statement comes after the Ukrainian president also said early Friday that the talk with Trump could take place “in the near future” after weeks of intensified diplomatic efforts to end the war between his country and Russia.

Asked by journalists, the president of Ukraine said that he could not guarantee that the meeting with his American counterpart would lead to an agreement, but stated that the parties would try to “finalize as much as possible”, the quoted source notes.

There is currently no confirmation from the Trump administration about the upcoming meeting between the two leaders.

According to Zelensky, the meeting was established after Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's chief negotiator in peace talks seeking a way to end the war started by Russia almost four years ago, told him about his latest contacts with representatives of the American side.

The Ukrainian president unveiled on Wednesday the new version of the American plan aimed at ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, negotiated for several weeks between Washington and Kiev.

This text foresees the freezing of the front on the current lines, without offering an immediate solution to the thorny problem of the territories occupied by Russia, which currently controls over 19% of the Ukrainian territory.

Unlike the original version of this document, drafted by the Americans, the new version of the plan leaves out two major demands of Moscow: the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donbas territories still under Kiev's control, and a binding legal commitment by Ukraine not to join NATO.

Russia: “It was agreed to continue the dialogue”

The Kremlin's foreign policy adviser, Yuri Ushakov, spoke by phone with several members of the US President Donald Trump's administration, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. He did not disclose when the call took place.

Putin's envoy Kirill Dmitriev brought copies of the US peace proposals to Moscow after a meeting in Miami over the weekend, and the details are currently being analyzed by the Kremlin, Peskov said.

“Information was analyzed and, on behalf of President Putin, contacts took place between representatives of the administrations of Russia and the United States,” Peskov said.

“It was agreed to continue the dialogue,” added the Russian president's spokesman.

Business daily Kommersant, one of Russia's leading newspapers, reported that Putin told top businessmen in the country that he might be willing to cede some of the territory controlled by Russian forces in Ukraine, but that he wanted all of Donbas (the industrial province that unites Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions).

In essence, Putin wants all of Ukraine's industrial eastern province, but outside this area “a partial exchange of territories on the part of Russia is not excluded,” the Russian economic daily wrote.
