Traces of an American mink were spotted in the forests of the Krasnoyarsk Territory

In the south of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, in the vicinity of Znamenka, forest firefighters noticed traces of an American mink.

The life of a mink is closely connected with water; its habitat usually stretches for a couple of kilometers along the shore. American women make nesting holes in niches under the overhanging banks of rivers and streams, in the voids of old beaver holes and under the roots of coastal trees.

The mink, like all representatives of the mustelid family, has an elongated, agile body, capable of crawling into almost any hole. The American's calling card is her short legs, on which she moves on land by jumping. The American mink jumps in length by a little more than one meter and in height by 50 centimeters.

“The most characteristic move is the three-bead move, in contrast to other mustelid relatives, who prefer the two-bead and four-bead move. The paw is placed on the trail not with the entire back sole, but only with its front part. When dragging heavy prey, the length of the jump is noticeably shortened, and a drag appears nearby – a line left by the victim’s carcass,” said the regional Forest Fire Center.

The American woman slides down the snowy slopes on her chest and stomach. To get food, it dives into the water, finding thawed patches in the ice.

These predators require a lot of food, because nature has blessed them with a fast metabolism. However, catching a fish is a great success for an American. Most often, she is content with crayfish or frogs, and sometimes also retrieves sleeping lake toads from the bottom.
