The explosion occurred inside the Imam Ali Ben Abi Taleb Mosque, located in the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood, an area known to be predominantly inhabited by members of the Alawite minority.
The Syrian authorities announced that an investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of the explosion. Security forces have cordoned off the perimeter and are conducting on-site checks.
According to local officials quoted by Reuters, the explosion could have been caused either by a suicide attack or by explosives placed inside the place of worship. The blast caused panic among worshipers, who fled as smoke filled the mosque.
