Asked if it is possible that 2025 will be the last year of peace for Europe, Viktor Orbán replied: “Yes, this cannot be ruled out.”

“We are used to war. The last major European war ended in 1945, and 80 years have passed since then. This is an extremely rare condition in Europe. For a long time, nuclear weapons of mass destruction deterred the peoples of the continent from starting a war. Everyone started from the idea that a European conflict would inevitably degenerate into a nuclear world war. This fear worked for eight decades. But now a world is taking shape new. There is a redistribution of financial, military and political power, which may even ignite a war. The war tension felt in Europe is the consequence of the decline of Western Europe and the European Union.”Viktor Orbán said in an interview for the publication Magyar Nemzet.

“Brussels wants war”

He warned that Europe was moving closer to war and accused Brussels of wanting conflict while “Hungary wants peace”.

“We came close to war. Last week, in Brussels, we only succeeded in slowing the pace of the slide towards war. There were forces that wanted to accelerate this process to “hypersonic speed”, and we managed to block them. But the process did not stop. We only prevented its acceleration. Today, in Europe there are again two camps: the war camp and the peace camp. Currently, the forces in favor of war are dominant. Brussels wants war, Hungary wants peace”said Viktor Orbán.

The Hungarian leader also claimed that, although the Russian-Ukrainian war seems to be the source of the risk of escalation, it is rather a consequence, and the real cause is “the political, economic and social decline of Western Europe. This process already began in the mid-2000s, and the wrong responses to the financial crisis accelerated it”adding that “20 years ago, the economic performance of the European Union and the United States was roughly at the same level. Today, America is on the rise and Europe is sliding down. The continent that was once a model for the world has become, in just a few years, an actor lacking credibility and ridiculed.”

Asked if this is why Europe is turning into a war economy, Viktor Orbán replied: “Yes. It is a well-known historical reflex. When they cannot compete with faster developing regions, they try to generate growth through a war economy. This is also the decisive reason why Europeans got involved in the Russian-Ukrainian war. Although this was not inevitable. In February 2022, Europe could have decided to send a peace mission to Moscow and Kiev and not declare this conflict as its own war. If that had happened, we would not be alive today Under the threat of war, Europe has chosen the path of war, including the intervention of the partisans of the war. This is a warning signal. The relations with America must be based exclusively on European interests.”

“The European Union is today in a state of disintegration”

Speaking about the leadership of the European Union, he said: “The European Union today is in a state of disintegration. What is happening is a process of disintegration, which is taking place simultaneously with the intensification of bureaucratic empire-building ambitions in Brussels. This is how the union falls apart: decisions are made in Brussels, but they are not implemented. First one country does not implement them, then two, then three. Despite the desire to strengthen central power, the decision-makers are constantly forced to take steps back. It is like a weightlifter which lifts the weight, but in the end it gets away with it. A clear example is the green transition, with a program launched against the will of the member states. They announced that from 2035 they will no longer be able to manufacture cars with classic engines. The same is happening in the case of migration.”

Hungary does not apply the migration pact and for this we are fined one million euros a day. The Poles do the same thing as us, but they are rewarded. The Union is constantly curtailing the sovereignty of nations while it is unable to use the powers it has assigned.

This is the chaos that reigns in Brussels today. Unless a deep reorganization takes place quickly – which would be possible – the disintegration will reach a point of no return.”

Ukraine's accession to the EU

Asked whether the price of peace might be Ukraine's accession to the European Union, and whether that would be acceptable to Hungary, Orbán said:

“Fortunately, there is no such link (…). This is just an attempt to sweeten a bitter pill. EU accession does not provide security guarantees. Moreover, it will never be achieved. Ukraine's accession to the EU is not realistic. Hungary openly opposes even starting negotiations, and in many countries of Western Europe parliamentary decisions or referendums would be needed. These will not happen. In the corridors of Brussels, everyone knows this and says it In the halls, however, the people of Europe see very clearly that the accession of Ukraine would strengthen it, but it would strengthen the security of Europe, but this is not true. With Ukraine, we are weaker every day.”Orbán said.

The economy of Hungary

He also spoke about how the Hungarian economy is affected, stating that it “suffering simultaneously from war and the decline of the European Union”.

“The EU's response to the war, the sanctions policy, has destroyed European industry. The price of energy has become two to three times higher than that of our competitors. Under these conditions, it cannot compete. The other problem is that Hungary is part of a declining union. Whoever is inside, decays with it. The union is today both necessary and dangerously harmful for us. It is necessary because a large part of our exports go there. At the same time, is dangerous, because if we fail to reorganize our exports to other growing regions, we will sink with it. Our task is that, while the Union is in decline, Hungary will develop. This is a major political and intellectual challenge.”Viktor Orbán also said.
