Siberian Federal University scientists reassured Krasnoyarsk residents about “Christmas tree mites”

Specialists from the Siberian Federal University commented on reports circulating in the media about “Christmas tree mites,” which can supposedly be brought home from the New Year tree. Scientists urge people not to panic.

According to Olga Tarasova, an entomologist at the Institute of Ecology and Geography of Siberian Federal University, arachnids living on coniferous trees are often confused with insects, such as aphids.

“Take a closer look – if the “guest” on the tree has a mustache and six legs, then it’s definitely not a tick. The tick has eight limbs, and there are no whiskers at all. Insects living on trees, in particular spruce and fir, parasitize them, and they should not transmit viruses to humans,” explains the expert.

Severe diseases are transmitted only by ixodid ticks, which live on the forest floor and not on branches. The likelihood of bringing such a tick with a purchased Christmas tree is extremely low. Most likely, there will be a herbivorous species on the tree that feeds on plant sap and is harmless to people.

Scientists note that a warm winter can indeed affect the activity of some arthropods, but there is no reason for serious concern. For complete peace of mind, before installing the tree at home, you can carefully inspect it and brush it off outside. For those who are still worried, experts remind them of an alternative – an artificial Christmas tree.
