The photovoltaic projects of the companies OMV Petrom and Complexul Energetic Oltenia have entered the construction phase. The electricity produced by these photovoltaic parks is estimated to cover the equivalent of the annual consumption of about 410,000 households, according to a press release from OMV Petrom sent on Monday.
The estimate is based on the average capacity factor for solar energy in Romania and the average electricity consumption per household according to ANRE data.
Located in the towns of Ișalnița, Tismana and Rovinari, the parks will have a total installed capacity of approximately 550 MW.
How much do photovoltaic parks cost?
The four photovoltaic parks are expected to become operational in 2026.
The total value of the investment for the four photovoltaic parks is over 400 million euros, of which approximately 70% is provided by the Modernization Fund, states OMV Petrom.
The first installment of this financing, worth approximately 16 million euros, was received in December 2025.
OMV Petrom and CE Oltenia are equal partners in the projects, each holding a 50% stake.
From mining to renewable energy
According to the release, within the framework of the RenewAcad program in Târgu Jiu, implemented by the Şanse Egale Foundation with the support of Wind Power Energy, in the last two years, over 200 mining technicians were retrained as installers of photovoltaic solar systems.
“We are transforming an area with a tradition of coal-based energy into a center of renewable energy,” said Franck Neel, member of the OMV Petrom Board of Directors responsible for Gas and Energy.
These requalifications take place in the context in which Romania will give up, in the coming years, coal-based energy.
