The president of POT, Anamaria Gavrila, condemned the request to suspend President Nicușor Dan, initiated by a group of parliamentarians, for which signatures are being collected starting today.
“There is a request from PACE for the suspension of Nicușor Dan circulating. We are not signing it as long as Mr. Georgescu is not allowed to run,” said the deputy, on Sunday evening, in a message published on Facebook.
“They are trying to replace Nicușor Dan with Ilie Bolojan”, added Gavrila.
Senator Ninel Peia from the PACE Group – First Romania announced that a group of parliamentarians intends to initiate the suspension of President Nicușor Dan, whom he accuses of interference in the operation of justice, as a result of the head of state's announcement regarding the organization of a referendum among magistrates.
Peia specified that the necessary supporting signatures, a third of the number of parliamentarians, are to be collected from Monday, and the request will be officially submitted on Wednesday.
The suspension of the President of Romania is regulated by Article 95 which stipulates:
(1) In case of committing serious acts that violate the provisions of the Constitution, the President of Romania may be suspended from office by the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, in a joint meeting, with the vote of the majority of deputies and senators, after consulting the Constitutional Court. The President can give explanations to the Parliament regarding the facts attributed to him.
(2) The proposal for suspension from office may be initiated by at least one third of the number of deputies and senators and shall be brought to the attention of the President without delay.
(3) If the proposal for suspension from office is approved, a referendum for the dismissal of the President is organized within 30 days at most.
