Folk calendar
Anna Dark
Today, Orthodox Christians honor Saint Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, because it was on this day that she conceived the Mother of God.
From this day on, the harshest days of winter begin – frosty and dark. The shortest day of the year falls on Anna the Dark herself – the winter solstice.
At this time, people in Rus' paid attention to signs. If abundant frost appeared on the trees, this foreshadowed a good harvest. We also looked at how the snow lay near the fence: if it was close, a bad summer was expected, but if there was a gap, it would be a fruitful one. According to the weather on Anna, they predicted what the New Year holidays would be like: if it is clear on this day, then the sun will come out on New Year’s Eve.
On Anna, pregnant women had to fast (on other days pregnant women were exempt from fasting), avoid any quarrels and not be seen by crippled and sick people. They were also forbidden to light a fire, knit, embroider, or take on any other work, so as not to harm the unborn child. People believed that the fire that the woman lit on this day would leave a mark on the baby's body; tangled threads will twist the umbilical cord; and the poor will pass on their ugliness to him.
In addition, beekeepers considered St. Anne's Day their holiday. In the morning they came to the Omshaniks, where the hives stood, and read a special spell for the health of the bees and a good harvest of honey next summer.
It was believed that during this period predators gather in large flocks and become especially dangerous.
