At the age of 55, former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle died with his family in a plane crash on Thursday, December 18, in Statesville, North Carolina. He was known not only for his sporting activity, but also for his devotion to the community, an attitude shared by his entire family.

Originally from Vancouver, Washington, Greg Biffle built a name for himself in NASCAR, competing for nearly 30 years in the various races organized by the association. Due to his developments and the constancy he showed, the American was included by NASCAR in top 75 best drivers in history.

Greg Biffle and family commemorated: 'Their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives'

On Thursday, Greg, his wife, Cristina, and their children, Emma and Ryder, lost their lives in a plane crash in Statesville, North Carolina. The plane, which was registered to a company owned by Biffle, took off from Statesville Regional Airport, but soon turned around and crashed on landing, starting a fire. According to ESPN, the reasons for the accident are unknown.

In addition to Greg Biffle and his family, 3 other people lost their lives in the accident: Dennis Dutton, Jack, his son, and Craig Wadsworth.

“This tragedy has left our families heartbroken beyond words. Greg and Cristina were devoted parents and active philanthropists, and their lives centered around their children Ryder and Emma. Emma was a wonderful being with a kind soul who was loved by so many people. Ryder was an active, curious and infinitely happy child. Each of them meant everything to us, and their absence leaves an immeasurable void in our lives,” the families of Greg and Cristina said in a statement.

Beyond his work in NASCAR racing, Greg Biffle was recognized for his dedication to the community. In 2024, after Hurricane Helena hits North Carolina, he has flown his own helicopter numerous times and delivered aid to communities in western and eastern Tennessee.

“Greg was more than a champion driver, he was a beloved member of the NASCAR community, an ardent competitor and a friend to so many. Beyond his racing career, he gave of himself for the good of the community. Most notably, Greg gave countless hours of his time to help the citizens of North Carolina during the disasters that followed Hurricane Helena. His tireless work saved lives,” the statement issued by NASCAR.

“The Biffle family contributed to hundreds of rescue missions in western North Carolina after Hurricane Helena. The last time I spoke to Cristina, just a few weeks ago, she asked me how she could help with the relief efforts in Jamaica. This was the Biffle family,” wrote Richard Hudson, a member of the US House of Representatives.
