Estonia installs bunkers on the border with Russia. This is part of the Baltic Defense Line


According to the engineering forces, the underground structures being built are primarily intended to protect soldiers against direct hits from 152 mm artillery ammunition used by Russian troops, as well as partially against a possible drone attack.
Work is currently underway to build the first five bunkers. Twenty more are expected to be ready in the coming months. According to the schedule, all of the planned facilities within the Baltic Defense Line are to be completed by the end of 2027.

In the middle of this year, digging of anti-tank ditches began. It was originally assumed that most of the bunkers would be built by the end of 2026, but administrative problems arose, including: with the purchase of land from the owners of the areas through which the fortified line runs.
The Baltic Defense Line project was agreed at the beginning of 2024 by the defense ministers of the Baltic states in Riga, Latvia. The aim of the joint interstate project of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia is to strengthen the eastern flankincluding protection against military incursion from Russia and Belarus. The Baltic line is to be connected with the Polish “East Shield”.
