FIFA makes drastic decision for 2026 World Cup after harsh criticism

After FIFA was hit by a wave of criticism because of the prices they set for tickets to the 2026 World Cup, the international forum decided to introduce a new category of tickets at the price of 60 dollars, about 51 euros. Although they are much cheaper, there are around 1000 tickets available per event.
Supporters' organization Football Supporters Europe (FSE) described the ticket prices as “exorbitant”. They called on FIFA to stop ticket sales and review the pricing structure. “Football Supporters Europe is appalled by the exorbitant ticket prices imposed by FIFA,” the FSE said in a press release. In particular, tickets allocated to countries for their official supporter groups or loyalty programs would be “astronomically” expensive.
The FSE calculated that a fan would spend at least $6,900 (about €6,000) to watch their team from the first game to the final. This is almost five times more than the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. “Where did these tickets go?” asked the FSE, after in 2018 it was said that tickets would start at $21. “That promise has completely disappeared in the meantime.”
FIFA introduced a new category of tickets: $60, but only 1000 available
Days after several groups spoke out against exorbitant ticket prices, FIFA reacted. They have introduced a new price category for tickets. Tickets in the so-called Supporter Entry Tier category cost $60 and are available for 104 matches. AD journalist Sjoerd Mossou, quoted by sportnieuws.nl, however, pointed out an important aspect: it is about 1000 tickets per match.
That means the rest of the tickets cost “normal”: between $220 and $600. According to FIFA, more than 20 million applications have already been submitted. The ticket raffle remains open until Tuesday, January 13, 2026.
