A photo is worth a thousand words, with Maia Sandu: “A woman who carries an entire country on her shoulders”

Maia Sandu was captured in a photo that went around the Internet, receiving military honors while climbing the stairs of the plane, upon departure from Greece to the Netherlands.

After two official visits to Cyprus and Greece, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, left for The Hague, where she is participating in an international meeting dedicated to Ukraine and post-war support mechanisms.

In a rare photo, captured at the airport in Greece, President Maia Sandu receives military honors just as she climbs the stairs of the plane, dressed simply like an ordinary passenger, with a backpack on her back, impressing many people.

Among them, the journalist Cristian Tudor Popescu, who had a short message: “A passenger: SANDU Maia, Republic of Moldova, Romanian citizen – CTP”.

Other people who commented on the photo highlighted the qualities of this political leader.

“Maia Sandu, leaving Greece for a meeting in the Netherlands, with a backpack, not a retinue. Red carpet, KLM plane, honor guard — and zero Vuitton bags, zero arrogance, zero “presidential suites”. For some, this is culture shock. For others, it's just European normalcy.” another person wrote.

Vasile Iustin Mija, probably a Moldovan citizen, had another impactful message.

“This photo is not just about a man or a protocol moment. It is about the Republic of Moldova seen and respected in the world. Maia Sandu's steps on the stairs of an official plane tell the story of a state small in size, but determined by values: democracy, peace, dignity. For the first time after a long time, Moldova is no longer perceived only through the lens of its vulnerabilities, but through the courage to choose its own path. Our presence on the international stage is no longer a shy one, but a clear one and assumed. We are there where decisions are made, where the voice of principles matters. Today, the Republic of Moldova means a state that is trustworthy because it has chosen the rule of law. This image is a symbol: Moldova is no longer invited.”he writes on Facebook, while a compatriot writes “I am proud of our President!”.

There were also comments in which people wanted to emphasize that they wanted Maia Sandu to run for office in Romania in the future.

“After she completes her mandate in Moldova, I hope she accepts to run in Romania as well. We need such a Margaret Thatcher here as well. All respect”, wrote a woman on Facebook.
