The Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Monday the launch, starting in January, of a monthly subscription for travel at the national level, worth 60 euros, a new social measure intended to help the population facing the increase in the cost of living, informs AFP, taken over by Agerpres.
“All citizens will be able to purchase a subscription that will allow them to travel throughout the country and use all medium-distance trains, suburban trains and national buses for a single price of 60 euros per month for adults,” the Spanish prime minister said in a press conference.
The price will be reduced to “30 euros for young people under 26”, said the Spanish Prime Minister, with the idea of facilitating “access to affordable public transport throughout the country”.
Sanchez did not specify how much the initiative would cost the central government in Madrid, at a time when the executive branch is trying to reassure the public about inflation, currently at 3%.
“This is a strong commitment to sustainable mobility,” continued the Socialist prime minister, whose country is on the front lines of climate change, highlighting “savings for many families” and praising “a transformative and essential measure for the everyday lives of our citizens.”
In total, “two million people will be able to get to work more easily every month, return home and go about their daily activities,” Sanchez said. He stated that this offer will come into force “from the second half of January”.
In Germany, a monthly transport pass – the price of which will increase to 63 euros from January 1 – is offered from May 2023, offering unlimited access to buses, metro, local and regional trains, except for high-speed trains.
