Former president Traian Băsescu declared on Sunday evening on Digi24 that Romania risks the reactivation of the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism if the laws adopted in the justice system are not amended in 2022, during the period when the relevant minister was Cătălin Predoiu, currently the Minister of Internal Affairs, whom the former head of state criticized.
Băsescu believes that the protests that broke out in the country after the appearance of the Recorder documentary “Captured Justice” show that “justice is a priority for Romanians, especially for the young generation”.
“I want to believe that this dialogue that the president will have with the judges who write to him will be fruitful, it will be useful, and I want to believe that the commission that is set up by the government to analyze the amendment of some laws will work quickly and efficiently. And maybe Mr. Predoiu will also be sent on a vacation,” said the former president, quoted by Ziare.com.
He is of the opinion that “Predoiu's laws must be changed”.
“The authority of the heads of courts and sections must be reduced to zero on solutions or on the process. Otherwise, the MCV could be reactivated,” the former president also said at Digi24, quoted by Libertatea.
Traian Băsescu said that the Judicial Inspection must provide answers after journalistic investigations such as the one from the Recorder.
“No matter who set up the Judicial Inspection, it must give answers. I think that, in the face of society's pressure, no one can afford to falsify things,” Băsescu also declared.
