Supporters of Narges Mohammadi said on Sunday that there had been no contact with the former Nobel laureate since her arrest and urged the Iranian authorities to release the activist and the dozens of people arrested with her, reports AFP.

Mohammadi, who won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize, was detained on Friday after speaking at a ceremony in Mashhad, eastern Iran, to commemorate lawyer Khosrow Alikordi, who was found dead earlier this month.

According to Mashhad prosecutor Hassan Hemmatifar, 38 people were arrested at the ceremony, including Mohammadi and another well-known activist, Sepideh Gholian. Lawyer Alikordi's brother Javad was arrested later the same day.

Mohammadi is serving several sentences in Tehran's Evin prison, accused, among other things, of spreading propaganda against the Islamic Republic. In December 2024, she was released after her sentence was suspended so she could undergo medical treatment.

What Mohammadi's foundation says

The activist was unable to make any phone calls after her arrest and “only a limited number of those arrested were able to contact their families,” her foundation said in a statement.

The organization expressed its “deep concern for the physical and psychological well-being of all detainees and calls for their immediate and unconditional release.”

The foundation says it has since learned that the case has been sent to the revolutionary prosecutor in Masshad and that the activist could be charged with crimes related to national security.

The foundation says it has received no information on her “whereabouts or condition.”

Prosecutor Hassan Hemmatifar, quoted by the IRNA news agency on Saturday, said investigations were ongoing. He accused Javad Alikordi, Gholian and Mohammadi of giving “provocative speeches, inciting people present to disrupt public order and chanting slogans that violated norms.”

Alicordi, 45, a lawyer who defended people arrested during the 2022-2023 protests, was found dead in his office on December 5.
