Waltz directly accused Kigali of inciting violence. — Instead of the march toward peace that we have seen under President Trump's leadership in recent weeks, Rwanda is leading the region towards increasing instability and war – he said and publicly called on Kigali to fulfill its obligations and recognize Kinshasa's right to defend its territory.
The agreement did not stop the wave of violence
According to the UN, since the signing of the peace agreements between the DRC and Rwanda on December 4, fighting on the border between these countries at least 400 people died and over 40,000 escaped from the areas covered by them. Clashes broke out between DRC troops, supported by Burundi, and fighters from the Rwandan-backed M23 movement.
Last week, the latter captured the Congolese town of Uvira in the South Kivu province, which allows them to control the border with Burundi and cut off that country from providing aid to Kinshasa.
Also on Friday Burundian authorities accused Rwanda of bombing its territory and threatened to respond to these attacks.
Rwanda, however, has consistently denied supporting M23 and blames Congolese and Burundian forces for the renewed fighting.
