House Democrats released 19 photos Friday, part of a total of about 95,000 images received from Epstein's estate as part of an ongoing investigation. “It's time to end the White House cover-up and bring justice to the survivors of Jeffrey Epstein and his powerful friends,” said Democratic representative Robert Garcia of California, the leader of the committee, according to Politico. “These disturbing photos raise even more questions about Epstein and his dealings with some of the most powerful people in the world. We will not rest until the American people know the truth. The Department of Justice must release all files, now.”.
Under legislation passed by Congress last month, the Justice Department is required to release all documents related to Epstein by December 19.
What the photos show
Among the published images, one shows Trump next to a young woman, whose face has been censored, and another captures the former president talking to a woman next to Epstein. One photo shows Trump smiling among several women, with his arm around the waist of one of them. In another image, branded condoms appear “I'M HUUUUGE!” sold for $4.50 each.
Bill Clinton is snapped smiling with Epstein and his associate Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for her role in the sex-trafficking ring. Although Clinton's ties to Epstein, including trips on his plane after he left the presidency, are well-documented, Clinton has said she severed all ties to Epstein before his arrest in 2019 and had no knowledge of any wrongdoing.
The photos highlight Epstein's extensive network of connections with influential people in various fields, from director Woody Allen to Steve Bannon. The materials were released to Congress under an oversight committee subpoena, separate from documents requested by the Justice Department.
Bill Gates is pictured smiling with Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly known as Prince Andrew, and an airline pilot. Larry Summers, former Secretary of the Treasury and President of Harvard University, is pictured in a small plane. In the wake of the new material, Summers was expelled from the American Economic Association and retired from his positions at Harvard.
Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon is pictured talking to Epstein at a desk and standing next to him in front of a mirror for a selfie, and in another photo he appears to be chatting with Woody Allen.
Reactions and next steps
Trump has claimed he cut ties with Epstein years ago and called efforts to release the files “a farceLast month, however, he allowed congressional Republicans to vote on releasing the materials and signed the bill into law.
The rest of the files will be released in the coming days, after the courts authorized the Department of Justice to make them public, and the 30-day deadline given to Attorney General Pam Bondi for this operation is coming to an end. Meanwhile, Clinton has been subpoenaed by the commission, but no date has been set for her hearing before investigators. Trump asked Bondi to investigate Democrats with ties to Epstein, including Clinton and Summers, and she delegated the investigation to U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton.
Rep. Garcia announced that Democrats on the Oversight Committee will continue to release photos “in the coming days and weeks”while protecting the identity of survivors.
