Does the number of teams in the Superliga change? Disclosures from inside the LPF: “There are discussions”

Marius Mitran, the director of communication from LPF, revealed that there is a discussion regarding the reduction of the number of teams in the Superliga and implicitly the number of stages.

The revelation came in the context in which Mihai Stoica, the president of the FCSB Board of Directors, complained about the high number of matches in the domestic championship, an effort that also affects the team's European course.

Disclosure on Super League change: “I know there's talk. A cut from 16 to 14, something like that”

Mihai Stoica started by criticizing the large number of Superliga matches and asking for a change: “This match was match number 34 in July 2024 in the European Cups. Before 34 matches were played in a season of League 1. Here is a big problem. I see that Marius Mitran is also there. We need to rethink the system. It is not normal to have the most matches in Europe. It is not normal for the Premier League to have 38 stages and League 1 40 in the play-off”, Mihai Stoica told fanatik.ro.

Marius Mitran replied and revealed that such a measure is being considered: “I know there is a discussion. A discussion in terms of reducing the number of teams. A reduction from 16 to 14, something like that. As it was before. It is a discussion. I don't know exactly, but something like that,” Mitran said.

Asked if he would prefer there to be 14 teams in the Superleague instead of 16, Mihai Stoica, the president of the FCSB Board of Directors, answered in the affirmative.

Of course. The system is too good, too spectacular, but I think it would be logical not to reduce the points. It's not normal to halve, even if it's more thrilling that way. It will never be reached, that's clear, but Romanian football would work well if we had 12 teams in the first league and about 16 in the second league. That is my opinion.

I know that wouldn't happen, drop from 16 to 12, but I think, given that every year 3-4 teams are below the others, that's how it should be.

Just think about it, exercise your imagination: 12 teams, 6 in the play-offs, 6 in the play-outs. In the play-offs it is very well known which places lead to the European cups. Imagine what a play-out would be with 6 teams and 3 directly relegated, or two relegated and one in the play-off. It would be something… Crazy!

  • The current system is a play-off / play-out format. The Superliga starts with 16 teams that play in a round-trip format during the regular season. At the end of the regular season, the points are halved, and the top 6 teams enter the play-off for the fight for the title, and 10 teams enter the play-out for the fight to avoid relegation.
