In Romania, people live, on average, 77 years. Vâlcea and Bucharest are at the top, the south lags behind.

This text is an excerpt from the “EconoMix” newsletter, which journalist Dan Popa sends every Thursday morning. You can subscribe here:

Where most people live
At the top of the national ranking is Vâlcea, with an out-of-standard value: 83.01 years, followed by the Municipality of Bucharest (79.19 years), Sibiu – 78.81 years, Brașov – 78.49 years, Cluj – 78.43 years and Timiș – 78.39 years.
These areas combine higher incomes, better medical infrastructure and faster access to services.
Where life expectancy is lowest
At the opposite pole are the counties from the south and east: Călărași – 74.45 years, Giurgiu – 74.68 years, Tulcea – 74.89 years, Ialomița – 74.96 years and Satu Mare – 75.48 years
The difference between the extremes exceeds 8 years, a gap comparable to that between some European states.
Big differences between men and women
In all counties, women live longer. For example: in Bucharest, men reach 75.99 years, women 81.95 years, and in Vâlcea, the difference rises to over 5 years: 80.5 years men vs. 85.77 women
The newsletter also includes a survey, a review of a recently published book (“The Ideological Brain: The Radical Science of Flexible Thinking” – by Leor Zmigrod), a possible answer to the question: “Why don't I feel richer, even though I earn much better?”, press articles that caught my attention, the quote of the week, the economic calendar, etc.
