In Bucharest, there is currently a Multipurpose Hall, inaugurated on August 10, 1974, which was modernized twice, in 2008 and 2011. The capacity of the hall is 5,300 seats. And the new mayor, Ciprian Ciucu, promised that he would try to initiate a project to build a new Multipurpose Hall.

Ciprian Ciucu, the new mayor of Bucharest, wants a new Multipurpose Hall

Before the elections, Ciprian Ciucu and two other candidates for the Capital City Hall answered for Gazeta Sporturilur a set of 10 questions on sports, budgets, infrastructure and other sensitive topics in the world of Bucharest sports. And among the topics addressed is the Multipurpose Hall.

Asked if, “Is there any concrete plan for the construction of an ultra-modern multipurpose hall, a theme with which the people of Bucharest have been deceived for many years?”, Ciprian Ciucu said what he proposes.

There is such a plan, old for several years, at the level of the Ministry of Defense, in the Ghencea Stadium area, in Sector 5. Bucharest needs a modern, medium-sized multipurpose hall, approx. 30,000 seatseasy to build and operate.

I will evaluate existing options and look for adjacent solutions. I cannot promise to build a multipurpose hall that will be ready in the remainder of the term, but I can undertake the initiation of a project that has a reasonable degree of maturity“, said the new mayor of Bucharest for GSP.ro.

Over time there were different plans that did not materialize. Today, such an investment objective is not under the powers of a town hall like the Capital City Hall, but I believe that such a project is feasible. As Mayor General I will identify the land and create an Olympic pool.

Gabriela Firea also promised the Multipurpose Hall, Nicușor Dan said that it is not profitable

The theme of a new Multipurpose Hall was one that was constantly found in the speeches of the PMB candidates. And the last two mayors of Bucharest, Gabriela Fierea and Nicușor Dan, spoke about such a project.

In 2019, Gabriela Firea, as mayor, declared: “We will finally have a Multipurpose Hall, a multifunctional hall in Bucharest, after the epic that this project has experienced. It will be a multifunctional hall with a capacity of 20,000 seats, on an area of 60,000 square meters, which will also be equipped with an underground parking lot for 380 seats, apart from the hall There will be 5 sports fields in itself. The estimated cost is 138 million euros, execution time, maximum three years”.

Then, in 2024, in the campaign for PMB, the message “We have attracted 1 billion euros of European funds for Bucharest. We can do more for Sala Polivalentă”, was on an election poster of Gabriela Firea.

And Nicușor Dan, former mayor and current president, spoke in 2023, exclusively for Gazeta Sporturilor, about a new Polyvalent.

“To be very direct: there is a feasibility study and practically based on it we could have built a hall in the Lia Manoliu complex, after the relocation of the parachuting tower. But, in my opinion and the urban planners I consulted with, there is no suitable location for a multipurpose hall. We see what happens at football matches, how the whole neighborhood is blocked”, Nicușor Dan told GSP readers.

He had subsequently touched on the subject during his tenure. In much more pessimistic notes: “We don't have the money for a multipurpose hall in Bucharest. It costs a lot and we don't have that money. Then, it's not profitable! Look at the stadiums! Secondly, we can never do it with money only from the City Hall's funds.”
