“It can't happen again”

In Brussels, the ministers of justice and home affairs of the EU countries will try to reach an agreement on the solidarity mechanism, a key element of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, which from June 2026 is to ensure a fairer division of responsibility in the issue of migration. Poland is represented by the Minister of Interior and Administration, Marcin Kierwiński.

What information does Poland expect from Ukraine?

Will Poland accept refugees?

Who represents Poland in the talks in Brussels?

What agreements will be discussed during the meeting with the Ukrainian minister?

— You could say we've been successful. Today we will formally close the issue of the migration pact. Poland will not participate in any relocation mechanism. We will not accept any refugees and we will not pay any compensation. This political harmony that has been achieved is very good for Poland. It's a good day. Especially since this mechanism will be in force for many years, said the minister in a conversation with journalists.

– At the same time, we say clearly that – when it comes to the entire migration pact – The EU should focus more on defending its external borders than on procedures. There is too much bureaucracy, procedures, and too little real support for countries such as Poland that defend the EU's external borders, he added.

Minister on talks with Ukraine. “It can't happen again”

Marcin Kierwiński was also asked by journalists about talks with the Ukrainian authorities regarding recent events in Poland, including: acts of sabotage in which Ukrainian citizens were involved, often acting on behalf of Russia. Today, the police announced that three Ukrainian citizens with spy equipment were detained in Warsaw. However, it is not known whether they have been convicted before.

— Talks with Ukraine look good. Minister Żurek met with his counterparts in Ukraine. Our position is clear – We expect Ukraine to provide up-to-date information about all persons convicted there in absentia for acts of sabotage. We expect that these people will be registered in international systems so that we can tightly defend the border against such people, said the head of the ministry.

Kerwiński admitted that he would meet his Ukrainian counterpart Ihor Klymenko in the near future.

— These will be contracts regarding the police, but they will also talk to him again about this we expect greater involvement from the Ukrainian side, so that every person who has committed this type of crime and is convicted is recorded in the Polish and European border guard systems – he concluded.

— We have located the problem on the Ukrainian side and that is why we are talking to our Ukrainian counterparts. We assume that they use appropriate notes, that someone is recorded in international systems, but it happened that this was not the case and this we tell them it can never happen again – emphasized Marcin Kierwiński.
