The participants of the demonstration – mainly women – called for an end to femicide, rape and hatred against women.
According to the Brazilian Public Security Forum think tank, one in three Brazilian women has been a victim of sexual or gender-based violence within a year. The data also shows that 1,492 women were murdered last year. This is the highest number since 2015, when the term femicide was introduced into Brazilian law, defined as the killing of a woman as a result of domestic violence or due to hatred against women.

The Associated Press recalls three shocking cases of violence against women that have occurred in recent weeks. On November 28 in Rio, two school employees were shot and killed by a co-worker. On the same day in Rio, the former partner brutally ran over a 31-year-old woman with her car, as a result of which she lost her legs. A week earlier in Florianopolis, an English teacher was raped and strangled on her way to the beach.
