The largest attack of cod on capelin was recorded off the coast of Norway
Scientists observed the collision off the Norwegian coast during the seasonal spawning of capelin, which usually takes place in February-March.
The capelin formed a school of approximately 23 million individuals. About four hours later, the cod, forming a group of similar size, attacked and consumed about 10.6 million capelin.
Dramatic changes in fish behavior could significantly affect the abundance of prey populations, as well as the stability of the ecosystem, scientists report with caution.
