NATO increases weapons support for Ukraine. Poland joins the program


The PURL (Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List) program allows NATO countries to finance the purchase of weapons and ammunition from American resources, which then go to Ukraine, which has been fighting the Russian invasion since February 2022. The supplied equipment includes, among others: air defense systems, drones, ammunition for F-16 fighters and missiles that help protect Ukrainian cities and key infrastructure against Russian attacks. NATO and Canada have already pledged $4 billion. for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.

The first country to support Ukraine under PURL was the Netherlands, providing USD 570 million in August. Shortly afterwards, Denmark, Norway and Sweden declared a joint package worth USD 500 million. In mid-August, Germany announced support of another $500 million, and Canada joined with the same amount at the end of the month. In November, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and Denmark declared a joint package worth USD 500 million.
Poland also got involved in the program. During a meeting in Brussels, Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski announced joint support from Poland, Germany and Norway in the amount of USD 500 million. In a conversation with the media, he noted that the Polish contribution was USD 100 million. and includes, among others: missiles for Patriot systems, which are intended to protect Ukrainian cities and energy infrastructure.
“These are mainly effectors for Patriot batteries, which will protect Ukrainian cities and power plants against Russian missiles. Together with Norway and Germany, we are donating $500 million, of which $100 million is our contribution.” – said Sikorski.

The Secretary General of NATO expressed hope that by the end of 2025 the value of support for Ukraine will reach at least USD 5 billion. Rutte emphasized that in 2026, Alliance countries will have to transfer at least USD 1 billion per month, which is approximately USD 15 billion. annually.
Not all countries disclose their financial contributions. An example is Slovenia, which joined the program in October. During the conference in Ljubljana with Rutte's participation, Prime Minister Robert Golob refused to provide details, explaining that the amount was secret.
However, the PURL program is not limited only to NATO countries. Australia and New Zealand, the first non-European partners of the Alliance, also declared their participation.
The Ukrainian authorities, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have repeatedly emphasized the importance of PURL as a key instrument for acquiring American weapons. Thanks to this mechanism, it is possible to deliver air defense systems, ammunition and other means necessary to defend the country. Allies are calling for accelerated implementation of commitments, especially in the context of the upcoming winter and long-term plans for the coming years.
