Folk calendar
Prokopiev day.
On this day the memory of Saint Procopius the Reader is celebrated, who suffered martyrdom at the beginning of the 4th century.
As they believed in Rus', a good, durable sleigh track was established from Procopius. “Prokop came and dug up a snowdrift, stepped in the snow, and dug a road,” people said about this. On this day, winter markers were placed in the snow to mark the path. The road built to Procopius lasted until spring. “A winter digger will dig a road, but a winter digger will destroy a road,” people noted.
Usually roads were paved by the entire village, and after that a treat was arranged for the workers and a worldly celebration was started. In addition, starting from Prokopiev Day, the men, as they say, “sled” – they made and repaired sleighs.
Children on Prokop usually gathered on the street, had noisy celebrations – played snowballs, rode down the mountains. Village youth often joined the children. In the evening, after taking a walk, we asked riddles about winter fun: about riding from the mountains (“There’s a horse downhill, and a piece of wood uphill”); about children's sleds (“Two wolves are running, both looking at the sky”); about horses and sleighs (“The runners run, the runners crawl”).
