A unique moment in European football is set to take place on Tuesday: only one man will be allowed into the Johan Cruijff Arena for the game between Ajax and Groningen, scheduled to be played behind closed doors.

His name is Peter, a supporter battling a terminal illness who wanted one last game with the club of his life.

The last wish, shattered after only six minutes

On Sunday, Peter was brought to the stadium on a stretcher, accompanied by a medical team, to experience his “last game”. He wanted to share the moment with his son, in the place where he experienced joys and emotions for decades, but the game lasted only six minutes.

The F-Side gallery set off a huge pyrotechnic display to pay tribute to Thijmen, an Ajax supporter who died in an accident aged just 29.

The amount of fireworks was so great that play became impossible and the match was stopped and eventually called off.

The doctor says: “Football was everything in his life”

Andre, a member of the medical team that transported him to the stadium on Sunday, told RTL News how important football was to Peter:

He played football all his life, he was also a referee. Football was everything to him. That's why the hospital allowed him to go to one last match”.

According to the same witness, Peter was deeply “disappointed” and “frustrated” that the moment he had been waiting for months had ended before it had really begun.

Huge mobilization online

When the story became public, social media exploded. Tens of thousands of people demanded that Peter be admitted to the rescheduled match, even though the game was to be played behind closed doors.

Some have even announced that they are willing to cover all the costs of transportation and treatment to get him back to the stadium.

The club reacted quickly and gave a firm answer: Peter will be present.

His wife told us he was very happy“, an Ajax spokesman said, after the supporter learned the news.

The match between Ajax and Groningen will take place on Tuesday, from 15:30 (Romanian time).
