In the Novosibirsk region, more than 300 roe deer that were stuck on a frozen lake during migration were rescued, sibnovosti.ru reports, citing the regional Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology.
The animals head towards Kazakhstan, but along the way they come out onto frozen lakes and fall through: the ice is not yet strong enough to support the weight of the deer. Local residents are trying to save those they can: they go on raids on snowmobiles and off-road vehicles. But there are dozens of lakes in this region – it’s impossible to catch them all. “You save someone who’s still alive, you try to warm her up, but you look – she’s already dead, because you arrived late,” said one of the volunteers.
Last weekend, representatives of the ministry and employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations rescued more than 300 animals migrating from the territory of the Altai Territory. They found themselves in a dangerous situation, unable to cross an ice-covered lake on their own. Karasuk district. Rescuers used a hovercraft, which allowed them to safely navigate through thin ice and deliver help exactly to the spot. Concerned local residents and experienced hunters were involved in the work, whose knowledge and skills turned out to be irreplaceable.

“The information spread on the Internet about the death of several hundred individuals is not true. Unfortunately, there were some losses, but through joint efforts we managed to save most of the livestock. This situation is a clear example of how mass migration confronts wild animals with man-made and natural traps. Roe deer get stuck in fences, cannot climb up icy slopes of reservoirs, and fall into ditches and pits. At one moment, a strong and beautiful animal turns into a helpless victim of circumstances,” said Semyon Doppler, head of the department for the protection of animal life of the ministry.
