Folk calendar
Avdey Radetel
On this day, the memory of Saint Obadiah, one of the twelve minor biblical prophets, is celebrated.
Russian people believed that Avdey (Avdiy) patronized the household and family well-being. For this the saint was nicknamed the Guardian. On his name day, it was necessary to knock with the butt of an ax on all the door frames and window frames – according to legend, this prevented evil spirits from getting into the house.
They were also afraid to go out on Avdey. “The blizzard takes over the road, drives dashing diseases into the cracks of the earth,” people said. They tried to stay at home, close to the warm stove, and drink hot drinks to protect themselves from colds. The most popular was sbiten – a drink based on honey and herbs.
