Tired of paying for a few limp mint sprigs at the supermarket? There is a way that will turn your windowsill into an endless source of freshness. And you don’t need seeds or a whole bush for this: just one popsicle stick and a sprig of fresh mint.
Mint is a persistent and tenacious plant. Its main strength is in the nodes, the places where the leaves grow. It is there that the beginnings of future roots are hidden. Our task is to wake them up.
Step by step instructions:
Preparing the stem: Take a fresh mint stem 10-15 cm long. Remove the lower leaves, leaving 5-7 cm of clean stem.
Stimulation: Lightly scratch the bottom of the stem with a knife to speed up root formation.
Sprouting: Place the stem in water, making sure the leaves remain dry. Keep in a bright place, changing the water every 2-3 days.
Transplantation: When roots appear (3-4 cm), plant the plant in loose soil. Water and place on a well-lit windowsill.
Stores often sell plants grown using intensive technology. Their root systems are weak and resources are depleted. Our cuttings, which took root in water, are initially healthy and adapted to home conditions. It will grow strong and resilient.
As soon as your bush grows, cut off the new tops and place them in water again. And so on in a circle. Once you start this process, you will have an endless cycle of fresh mint in your kitchen.
