The great revival of the Polish-Hungarian alliance has been canceled – said the Hungarian daily “Nepszava” on Monday, commenting on President Karol Nawrocki's cancellation of the meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban after his last conversation with Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

“Prime Minister Orban really hoped to find a new Polish ally in the person of President Karol Nawrocki. And everything pointed to this until Friday's visit of the Hungarian Prime Minister to Moscow,” the daily said.

According to the Hungarian newspaper, the government in Budapest and the Polish president share an attitude towards migration and the European Union, but “in terms of Russian aggression against Ukraine and strategic priorities, the new Polish president opposes Orban in the same way as his predecessor and Tusk's government.”

The pro-government weekly “Mandiner”, in turn, said that “Nawrocki's decision could be painful in 2023, but currently it is rather pathetic.” “Then the end of the war was not in sight (…) and there was a possibility that the Poles were right, that Ukraine could win thanks to military and financial support from the West – especially Poland – and sanctions policy (against Russia),” the weekly noted.

“But this is the past. Karol Nawrocki (…) made his decision at a time when it is more pathetic than significant,” it added, emphasizing that “Nobody cares what the main proponent of a failed strategy says.” towards the war in Ukraine.

However, the weekly emphasized that “Nawrocki has not completely lost his mind and has not resigned from the Visegrad Group summit.”

“This situation has not spoiled anything. We will survive, and the renaissance of Polish-Hungarian relations will not depend on it,” it concluded.

The head of the Presidential Office of International Policy, Marcin Przydacz, announced on Sunday the president's decision to limit the program of his visit to Hungary only to the summit of the Visegrad Group presidents in Esztergom.

Przydacz noted that this happened in connection with Prime Minister Orban's visit to Moscow and its context. “President Karol Nawrocki consistently supports finding real ways to end the war in Ukraine caused by the Russian Federation,” noted the head of the presidential BPM.

The president was to be in Hungary for two days – on Wednesday in Esztergom for the summit of the Visegrad Group presidents, and on Thursday in Budapest with an official visit, during which he was to meet with Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok and Prime Minister Orban.
