Artificial intelligence models are already advanced and inexpensive enough to perform the work of nearly 12 percent. American workforce – according to a report by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which is discussed by Fortune magazine.

The study, published Wednesday, focuses on the work that artificial intelligence can do cheaper than humans. Its authors emphasize, however, that the report concerns the technical capabilities of AI and what types of duties require replacing humans with artificial intelligence models is currently feasible, and not what jobs will disappear from the market in a specific time.
The report is based on analysis of 32 thousand professional skills in 923 types of work in 3 thousand American counties.
So far, AI has replaced humans mainly in the advanced sector technology; now researchers from MIT have determined that it can perform many jobs in such specializations as: finance, administration of the health care sector, logistics, services, accounting and human resources management.
According to a previous study by MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, completely replacing workers with AI in the short term would be too expensive or impractical in many situations.
As Fortune comments, the conclusion for American companies from the latest MIT report should be that the period in which the use of AI seems to be a distant future is coming to an end. For governments, this is a signal that they need to address issues such as retraining workers, supporting sectors and regions exposed to unemployment, and preparing social support plans and tax systems for those market areas where AI can already do a large part of the work.
