Salvamont Brașov announced on Saturday evening that the search operations for George, an 18-year-old man who disappeared in the Bucegiu Mountains a week ago, “will be resumed as soon as the evolution of the weather will allow activities to be carried out in optimal conditions”.
Rescuers say no “relevant new information” has been identified.
“Search actions continued without interruption both yesterday and today, with more than 20 mountain rescuers being mobilized. Salvamont teams checked several areas, resumed previously traveled routes and carried out new searches in the initial area. Unfortunately, these efforts have not led, until now, to the identification of new relevant information. We note that, in some places, the snow exceeds two meters,” said Salvamont Brașov, in a statement on Facebook.
“Field operations will be temporarily suspended”
Salvamont Brașov announced that the search actions “will be suspended” until the weather conditions improve.
“Considering the severe deterioration of the weather conditions, operations in the field will be temporarily suspended, for the safety of the rescuers and the efficiency of the intervention. The searches will be resumed as soon as the evolution of the weather will allow the activities to be carried out in optimal conditions, and the teams will continue the complete survey of Văia Șigăneşti and the adjacent areas,” the statement added.
Rescuers said they were making “every effort” to find the young man as quickly as possible.
“We assure the family that they benefit from our full support and that we are making all the necessary efforts to find George in the shortest possible time. We thank you for your understanding and support and we ask that we maintain decency in this situation, considering the difficult moments that the family is going through”, concluded Salvamont Brașov.
George disappeared last Sunday in the Bucegi Mountains
The 18-year-old, who was in an advanced state of exhaustion and hypothermia, requested the help of mountain rescuers last Sunday, who searched for him all night, to no avail.
The searches continued in the following days, also without success. Instead, the mountain rescuers discovered a backpack with equipment in the area indicated by the tourist, which was handed over to the Police.
Brasov mountain rescuers used, on Wednesday, for the first time, a Black Hawk helicopter of the General Aviation Inspectorate, so that the intervention teams could be quickly taken to the hard-to-reach parts of the massif.
Although even a drone equipped with a thermal imaging camera was used, the young man has still not been found. A picture of George was released Friday evening, and people with relevant information were asked to contact the authorities.
