On December 7, 2022, Castillo announced the dissolution of parliament and his intention to rule by decree. On that day, Congress was scheduled to vote on his impeachment over corruption charges. However, the politician did not have the support of the army and was removed from office by the parliament on the same day.

Castillo will serve his sentence in a special prison where three other former presidents are already imprisoned: Martin Vizcarra (head of state in 2016-2018), sentenced on Wednesday to 14 years in prison for accepting bribes before taking office, Ollanta Humala (2011-2016), sentenced in April to 15 years in prison for money laundering, and Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006), sentenced in 2024 to 20.5 years in prison for bribery and money laundering.

On November 21, Peruvian authorities issued a national and international arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez, who is also accused of participating in the 2022 coup attempt. Chavez has been staying at the residence of the Mexican ambassador since the beginning of this month. Peru broke off diplomatic relations with this country.
