According to VTB, the average amount of attempted theft of funds as a result of fraud attacks has decreased by 4 times this year.
The bank strengthened its monitoring of suspicious transactions, which helped its clients save 16% more funds from cybercriminal attacks than in the same period last year. About this on the eve of the 16th VTB Investment Forum “RUSSIA CALLING!” said Deputy Head of the Security Department – VTB Vice President Dmitry Sarantsev.

The main methods of criminals remain the same – social engineering and cyber attacks, but they are constantly evolving: from calls from cellular operators about tariff changes to schemes for withdrawing funds through cryptocurrency and duplicating user accounts in instant messengers.
In 2025, the key trend among fraudsters was deepfakes – artificial intelligence technologies for creating audio and video messages with the voices of relatives or bank employees, using recordings from social networks. Fraudsters have also used cash-out schemes, persuading victims to withdraw money from ATMs and hand it over to couriers, allowing them to evade their digital footprint entirely.
In addition, they distributed the malicious NFC Gate application, which intercepts the contactless chip signal and transmits it to another device. With its help, scammers forced victims to deposit cash onto drop cards at ATMs under the guise of a “safe account.”
“Our joint efforts with market participants and regulators are making life much more difficult for attackers, but they are quickly adapting. To win this fight, it is not enough to simply block attacks. We need preventive measures: the development of advanced technologies, close intersectoral cooperation and strong legislative support. It is for this purpose that VTB is actively participating in the creation of the Antifraud State Information System, which will ensure rapid data exchange and create a new level of security for all participants in the financial market,” noted Dmitry Sarantsev.
