The Italian press drew the conclusions, after Inter, coached by Cristi Chivu, was defeated by Atletico Madridscore 2-1, in round number 5 of the Champions League.

Inter had a pretty good game in Madrid, had several chances to score, but conceded in extra time when Jose Maria Gimenez scored with a header.

The conclusions of the Italians, after Inter lost in extra time with Atletico Madrid

The Gazzetta dello Sport headlined: “Inter, another cruel joke: Gimenez condemns the Nerazzurri to their first defeat in the Champions League in the 94th minute“.

The journalists continued, noting that Chivu's team played a good game, but the Romanian coach was lost in thought at the end:

“The Uruguayan's header decided a good game by Chivu's team. It was a gloomy week after the defeat in the Milan derby. It ends with Simeone running around celebrating like Tardelli (no – after the goal in the WC 1982 final, Italy – Germany 3-1), and Chivu standing still, lost in thought: the fifth defeat of the Nerazzurri this season, a dramatic one in extra time against Atletico.

It's a clear picture of how life is going at Inter at the moment. Even when they proudly and reasonably achieve an equal, even when they show character and the ability to survive missed opportunities, they throw everything away and complicate their lives for no apparent reason.

This time, the defeat hurts even more than the derby defeat, because Gimenez's header came at the last corner. The virtues of the Romanian team are there, but even more obvious are the flaws that continue to take away certainties and points. So much, too much.”

After 5 stages, Inter is 4th in the Champions League, with 12 points. Next up is the match with Liverpool, which will be played on December 9.
