Inter lost dramatically with Atletico Madrid, score 1-2, in stage #5 of the Champions League.
Julian Alvarez opened the scoring in the 9th minute, Inter equalized in the 54th minute, but Jose Maria Gimenez gave Chivu the decisive blow in the 90th+3rd minute.
Inter with the opportunities, Atletico with the goal in the first half: the phase of the goal, controversial
Cristi Chivu's midfielder entered the Atletico Madrid field casually, and in the 3rd minute he had already missed two great opportunities through Dimarco. The Italian shot well from the free-kick, but Musso opposed.
After a few seconds, Dimarco escaped to the left flank, closed his angle, but managed to shoot just wide of the Madrid goal. Top scorer Lautaro Martinez also sent a warning in the 8th minute: a shot from the edge of the box, parried by Musso.
After just one minute, Atletico escaped on the counterattack, an action started on the right flank. The ball was crossed to Alex Baena who took the ball first with his hip and then cleared it with his hand. He shot, the ball ricocheted to Julian Alvarez who did not forgive like Dimarco or Lautaro. After VAR analysis, the goal was validated.
Inter continued the recital of misses until the break: Calhanoglu with a shot from distance in the 20th minute, and Dimarco in the 43rd minute. Inter was the team that had the initiative, Atletico Madrid waiting for the Nerazzurri's mistake.
Zielinski did not miss! He simply executed Musso in a moment of relaxation for the Madrid players
The start of the second half was agonizing for the Nerazzurri. Barella hit the crossbar in the 46th minute, and in the 50th minute Dimarco missed from a one-on-one position with the goalkeeper. In the end, Zielinski was the most effective and scored in the 54th minute following a relaxation in the Madrid defense. The Pole opted for an unpretentious execution: he shot from the spot, on the ground.
Spirits flared after Chivu's side restored parity and in the 56th minute, a stronger tackle from Akanji saw a melee break out near Sommer's box, but the players were calmed down by their captains. Diego Simeone, on the other hand, was not forgiven by the “yellow” in the 64th minute for protests.
In the 72nd minute, Chivu replaced Lautaro Martinez, and the Argentinian was unhappy with the coach's decisiona sign of the high tension in the field.
Gimenez's header handed Chivu their first Champions League defeat
After Zielinski scored, Inter retreated defensively until the end of the game, waiting for the mistake of the Madrid players who took the initiative. Diego Simeone's students were not inspired in the offensive department either and did not give Sommer much trouble after the goal scored by the Pole.
The two teams attacked fearfully, waiting for the opponent's mistake, and it finally came to Inter's camp: Gimenez, in the 90+3 minute, rose above Bastoni and beat Sommer, marking Chivu's first defeat in the Champions League.
