The Kremlin said on Wednesday that the leak of a phone conversation between senior Kremlin and US officials was an attempt to derail negotiations on a possible peace deal for Ukraine, Reuters reports.
The American agency Bloomberg revealed that the American presidential emissary Steve Witkoff held a telephone conversation on October 14 with Yuri Ushakov, the foreign policy adviser of the Russian President Vladimir Putin, to suggest to him to collaborate on a similar plan for Ukraine and gave him advice on how to talk to Donald Trump.
Bloomberg also published a transcript of the entire conversation between the US envoy and the Russian presidential adviser.
On Wednesday morning, Ushakov was asked by Russian state television's chief Kremlin reporter Pavel Zarubin why the conversation was leaked.
“Probably to hinder negotiations. It is unlikely that this was done to improve relations,” Ushakov replied, quoted by Reuters.
“I talk to Witkoff a lot, but these discussions are not public,” Ushakov also said in the discussion with the Russian journalist Zarubin.
At the same time, Putin's adviser announced that Steve Witkoff, along with other key US officials, will come to Moscow next week for talks on a peace plan for Ukraine.
“As for Witkoff, I can say that a preliminary agreement has been reached that he will come to Moscow next week,” Ushakov said.
According to Bloomberg, in the call, which lasted just over five minutes, Witkoff advised Yuri Ushakov, Putin's top foreign policy adviser, on how the Russian leader should approach the issue with Trump.
Among those tips were suggestions for holding a talk between Trump and Putin ahead of Volodymyr Zelensky's visit to the White House later that week and using the Gaza deal as a starting point.
