Tanczos Barna says that cutting staff costs by just 8% would be enough for “a program like Anghel Saligny's for a whole year”

Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna stated, on Monday evening, November 24, that if personnel expenses in the state apparatus were to be reduced by only 8%, “we would have all the money for a program like Anghel Saligny for a whole year”. He added that monthly personnel expenses reach approximately 14 billion lei, “plus or minus 500 million lei”.

“I'll just give you a mathematical calculation: if we reduced not by 10 percent, but by 8 percent the personnel expenses in the public sector, we would have all the money for a program like Anghel Saligny for a whole year. In general, we have somewhere around 14 billion lei in monthly personnel expenses, plus or minus 500 million lei. But, if we reduced by, let's say, 8%, not 10, we would have the entire Anghel Saligny Program financed from there or we would have half of the financing requirement from Transporturi“, said Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna to Digi24.
The Deputy Prime Minister does not believe that there is still enough time to adopt a reform in the administration from January 1, 2026.
“I think today that we don't have time anymore. Because the implementation period of such a decision lasts for months. The last version that Mr. Cseke (Minister of Development, Cseke Attila – no) came up with was a proposal for implementation until March 31. The longer it is delayed, the later it will be implemented. You have to redo organizational charts, you have to redo personnel schemes, you have to rehire where you make layoffs, for example. So it is not done overnight. If we make the decision in December, we will probably implement it by the end of April“, said Deputy Prime Minister Tanczos Barna.
Last week, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared that in the administration reform package it was foreseen that all ministries should consider a reduction in expenses of up to 10% of the salary envelope, next year, showing that some may make staff reductions, others may work on increases or other measures to reduce expenses.
