One company was interested in purchasing the property and paid a deposit of approximately PLN 1.9 million, but withdrew its intention to purchase the property and lost the amount paid. A university spokeswoman did not disclose the name of the company.

The sale of the tenement house is related to further investment plans and changes in the structure of the university, including plans related to the construction of the headquarters of the Faculty of Computer Science, as well as the construction of a new dormitory and further development of the university.

The Golden Tenement House at 41 Długi Targ, also known as the Steffens House and the Speimann Housesince the Middle Ages, it belonged to wealthy Gdańsk burghers who held positions in the city authorities. It is believed that at the end of the 15th century there was a one-story tenement house here, probably visible in the painting “The Rent Penny” by Anton Möller. At the end of the 16th century, its rooms were used several times during the stays of King Sigismund III Vasa in Gdańsk.

In 1601, the property was purchased by Johann Speimann, who in 1609 commissioned Abraham van den Blocke to build a new Mannerist tenement house with a richly carved façade, completed in 1618. In the 18th century, an additional office and a mezzanine were added in the hall, and after Speimann's death, the building remained in the hands of his heirs until it came into the family in 1786 Steffens, with whom it remained until 1918. After being taken over by the city, it was connected to the neighboring tenement houses, restored in 1924–1925 and partly intended for museum collections that were lost during World War II. Destroyed in 1945, it retained its facade, so it could be rebuilt, and after 1952 it housed the Maritime Institute. (PAP)
