24 November 14:33

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the arrival of the first train at the Abakan station, the Krasnoyarsk Railway spoke about this historical event.

On November 23, 1925, the first train arrived at the platform of the Abakan station, located three kilometers from the Khakassian village of Ust-Abakanskoye. The passenger train, led by a steam locomotive, came to the future capital of the Republic of Khakassia from Achinsk (Krasnoyarsk Territory). The train was on the road for almost a day: during this time it covered a distance of 459 km along the Achinsk-Minusinsk Railway (KrasZhD section Achinsk – Uzhur – Abakan).

The event was so large-scale that the day the train arrived—Monday—was declared a holiday. Residents of the village of Ust-Abakanskoye greeted the train on the platform with applause and shouts of “Hurray!” After just 6 years, the village received a new status – the city of Abakan appeared on the map of Russia.

With the opening of regular train traffic, the industrial development of the southern territories of Siberia began: the Republic of Khakassia had access to the Trans-Siberian Railway instead of the long waterway along the Yenisei. This stimulated the development of deposits and the emergence of new enterprises. Carloads of coal, ore, wool, leather and other goods were sent from the region.

During the Great Patriotic War, trains with cargo for the front were formed in Abakan, and wounded soldiers and evacuated residents arrived in the republic along the steel highway.

In the 70-80s of the last century, developed railway communications created conditions for the construction in Khakassia of such industrial giants as the Sayano-Shushenskaya hydroelectric power station, the Sayanogorsk aluminum plant, and Abakanvagonmash.

Currently, Abakan is the largest and most dynamically developing station in the south of Siberia within the Krasnoyarsk Railway: it is a key logistics hub that closes the Southern Railway Mezhdurechensk – Taishet with the Achinsk-Minusinsk and Trans-Siberian sections into the railway “ring”.

In 2013, a new park was built at the station to receive and process eastbound transit trains, in 2019 a new railway station was opened, and in 2024 a new specialized site with an area of 5.5 thousand square meters was built. m for processing large-capacity containers.

Every day, Abakan station receives dozens of trains of all categories – freight, container, passenger. From here, regional products are sent, including for export, to China and the countries of the Asia-Pacific region.
