Ukraine struck a major thermoelectric power plant in the Moscow region with drones on Sunday morning, causing a fire and forcing back-up power and heat, the governor of the region around the Russian capital said, according to Reuters and the Kyiv Independent.
Ukrainian drones hit the Shatura power plant, located about 120 km east of the Kremlin, on Sunday, Moscow Region Governor Andrei Vorobiov said.
“Some of the drones were destroyed by the air defense forces. Several fell on the territory of the plant. A fire broke out at the facility. Now it is located,” Vorobyov added.
Several Russian publications on Telegram also said that the Ukrainians hit the plant overnight. At the time of publication of this news, there was no public information regarding the extent of the damage caused or the possible victims.

The Ukrainian military has not yet commented on the attack.
Before the governor's remarks, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that two Ukrainian drones had been shot down while en route to the capital. Rosaviatsiya, the Russian aviation authority, also announced that Moscow's Zhukovsky Airport has temporarily suspended operations due to drones in the region.
Ukraine regularly launches attacks against military and industrial facilities in Russia and Russian-occupied territories, relying mainly on domestically developed drones.
The attack comes as Kiev escalates attacks on Russian oil, gas and energy infrastructure, a key source of revenue for Moscow.
In recent months, Russia has also stepped up attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure in an attempt to force Ukraine through another harsh winter.
