Folk calendar
Matryona Winter
On this day the memory of the Venerable Matrona of Constantinople, who lived in the 5th century in Constantinople, is celebrated.
In Rus' they said that “from Matryona (Matrona) winter rises to its feet, and frosts fly from the iron mountains.” By signs on this day they judged the weather for the coming days. Frost promised frost, and fog promised thaw. The geese who came out onto the ice in search of open water also spoke about the coming warming. But if the weather was cloudy and snowy on Matryona, this foreshadowed a stormy May. On this day, it was possible to predict the future harvest: frost promised an oat harvest, and rain – wheat.
On this day, various medicinal herbs and roots were brewed and steamed to prevent winter ailments.
