Mysterious black balls discovered on Sydney beaches, feared by local authorities and causing the city's beaches to be closed, turned out to be made of shit – ABC TV channel
Australian rescuers found them back in mid-October on 11 local beaches, which were subsequently closed by authorities. It was previously assumed that the balls were made of oil. The balls were collected and sent for testing. The study showed that the balls are made of human feces.
As scientists note, the reasons for the release of these balls onto the beaches of Sydney are still unclear.
The Randwick City Council acknowledged that it could be tar balls that form when oil comes into contact with debris and seawater, but there were no reports of oil spills from ships.
