Arsenal confirmed on November 19 that they will end their controversial sponsorship deal with Rwanda from next summer.
The London club have promoted tourism in the African country through 'Visit Rwanda' branding on their shirt sleeves and in-stadium advertising since 2018, in a deal that brought in around €12m a year to the Gunners' coffers.
Arsenal to drop partnership with Rwanda
This partnership, however, has been the target of intense scrutiny from Arsenal supporters due to concerns over the human rights situation and lack of freedoms in Rwanda, including the persecution of political opponents.
The controversy intensified in February this year when the United Kingdom announced the suspension of its aid to the country and refusal to attend events organized by Rwanda. The decision was motivated by the Rwandan government's alleged support for the M23 rebel movement in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In April, supporters' group Arsenal Fans for Peace organized a protest calling for the sponsorship to end. Faced with rumors of a possible contract renewal, the group stated that “the club's values and soul were for sale”.
On learning of the club's decision, James Turner, a member of the group, said: “We know money is the most important thing, but if the supporters come together and speak, they have to listen“.
“This shows that Arsenal still have the class and values to do what is right. Ending this deal is a step towards peace,” he added.
In an official statement, Arsenal explained that the end of the partnership is due to a change in strategy on the part of Rwanda, who are now looking to diversify their sponsorships and expand into new markets that support their tourism and investment ambitions.
Despite the departure from Arsenal, the “Visit Rwanda” brand continues to sponsor other big clubs such as PSG and the North American teams Los Angeles Rams of the NFL and Los Angeles Clippers of the NBA.
