Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced on Monday that he received from the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, a letter in which she requests additional funds for Ukraine from the EU member states, according to the MTI agency, taken over by Agerpres.
“We will not throw our money away on Saturday,” Orban promised in a video message on Facebook. According to the Hungarian Prime Minister, the letter signals that the amount needed to finance Ukraine is significant. “And in this letter she is asking us for money. The President (of the European Commission, editor's note) is asking the member states for money”, he said.
“I'm trying to control my first instincts, so that I can write a polite (reply, ed.) letter, because it's really shocking that, while it has come to light that the war mafia in Ukraine is stealing money from Europeans – only God knows exactly where it is -, instead of ordering an audit or suspending new payments, the president of the Commission suggests that we send even more money,” Orban says in his message.
Financial support for Ukraine is “killing” the European Union and is “simply crazy”. Putin's best friend in the EU thinks Russia will win the war
This “is like trying to cure an alcoholic of drinking by sending him another case of vodka”, remarked the Hungarian Prime Minister.
Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union has provided Kiev with financial, military and humanitarian aid totaling approximately 178 billion euros to date.
Ursula von der Leyen announced last Thursday in the European Parliament that the EU released a new tranche of financial aid for Ukraine, worth about six billion euros.
